Classic healthy snacks
Fresh vegetables and fruits are the perfect choice for a quick snack. An apple or some carrots can quickly satisfy that hungry feeling, while their healthy nutrients and fibers support you in your diet. In order to avoid sabotaging yourself, you shouldn’t keep chocolate or other unhealthy snacks in your fridge. If you have children, this is also a great way to stop them from eating unhealthy sweets.
Nuts also make great healthy snacks for weight loss
Nuts are often being avoided because they contain much fat. But in low quantities they also make for a great snack in-between meals while they provide you with many important nutrients and unsaturated fatty acids. When you choose them as healthy snacks, you should always make sure to get a dry-roasted mix of them. Otherwise they are pretty much full of unhealthy saturated fatty acids that will not only counteract your weight loss efforts, but also harm your cardiovascular system.
Avoiding fat and sugar in your healthy snacks is important
This is why, for example air-popped popcorn, also makes a great snack when you try to lose weight. It is important to look for foods that contain high amount of fibers because they will sate your hunger while they have a low amount of calories. So, things like unsalted crackers made out of whole-grain and crisp breads are also a great choice for healthy snacks.
Yogurt and low-fat cheese are also a perfect choice because they contain a lot of protein and this is what keeps you sated for a long time, too. Of course, you can also combine fruits and yogurt for a very vitamin-rich and healthy snack. You can be very creative in combining those basic things so you don’t have to abandon some variations in your snack plan.
Chocolate can also be a healthy snack
Nuts aren’t the only counter-intuitive choice when it comes to picking a snack that is good for you. Of course, all the cream-filled kinds of chocolate aren’t healthy. But, pure chocolate, which has a high amount of cocoa, preferably above 70 %, is very healthy. Cocoa contains a lot of valuable nutrients that are good for your body and overall health. You shouldn’t overdo it though, as overeating healthy chocolate, will of course make you gain weight again.
Where to find recipes for healthy snacks?

At Last… 8 Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time

11310574024_2009-03-19-013.jpgWinter is upon us, which means that everyone is bundled up in sweatshirts and pajamas sitting in front of the television waiting for the snow outside to melt in 3 months. Getting into that bikini swim suit (and looking good in it) is probably not on the top of your priority list right now. That is OK. You have a little time to get in shape.

The problem with this way of thinking though, is that most people add fuel to the fire by eating junk food. Living a sedentary life, even if it is only for a few months, is bad enough. If you want to relax this winter, go for it! But at least eat properly. Here are 10 tasty and healthy snacks that are great for television downtime.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #1: Popcorn
You are better off skipping it at the movie theater, but at home you can prepare it in a healthy way. A bucket of oil-popped movie theater popcorn can contain as much fat as three to five double cheeseburgers. But air-popped popcorn is a relatively healthy treat. Three cups of popcorn have just 93 calories and 1.5 grams of fat.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #2: Pistachios
Pistachios are a great heart-healthy snack full of antioxidants, fiber, and good fats. A 1/2-cup serving only has 170 calories, with 6 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber. However, that serving also has 14 grams of fat, so do not stuff yourself on them. They key here are the shells. Since they are difficult to open, more work is involved which will make you eat slower.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #3: Red Grapes
OK, you had to have known that fruits and vegetables would be on this list. As much as people want to avoid them these days, there will never be a processed snack food that will even come close to matching the nutrition and health benefits of fruits and vegetables. At the top of the pile is red grapes. Full of anti-oxidants and vitamins, red grapes are natures answer to sweet candy.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #4: Mini-pizzas
Forget the frozen food section on this one. Anyone with a toaster can make their own healthy version of frozen pizza. All you need is a whole wheat English muffin, tomato sauce and low-fat mozzarella cheese. The more vegetables and herbs you add to it, the healthier and tastier it will be.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #5: Pita chips With Hummus
This is another snack you must make on your own if you want it healthy.  All you need is a large whole wheat pita. Cut the edge of the pita into chip-size pieces. and then cook them in the oven until crispy before serving with your favorite hummus or dip recipe. In general, when you rely on pre-packaged foods to do the work for you, the price you pay for it is your health.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #6: Relish Tray
Pickled vegetables are extremely low in calories and a great alternative to snacking on high fat, high sugar processed foods. Marinating your vegetables in vinegar or heart-healthy olive oil will control the amount of salt you eat. The reason fruits and vegetables accelerate weight loss is because they are water rich, which means you get a full, satisfied feeling without the calories.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #7: Green Tea
You may not think this is technically a snack, but the health benefits of drinking just one cup of green tea a day can allow you to splurge a little more than usual and still keep your figure in tact. The reason this works is because this beverage has been known to actually stimulate and accelerate a persons metabolism. At the same time it fills you up, so you have a more satisfied, healthy feeling.

Healthy Snacks for TV Couch Time #8: Protein Bars
This is the closest thing you will get to eating a chocolate candy bar that is relatively healthy. The best reason these are great for snacking is because they are not trigger foods like crackers and potato chips, so you will not want want to eat a lot at once. Protein helps build lean muscle mass, which is essential if you plan on being sedentary until the spring.

Not that this needs to be said, but you can enjoy even more snack food if you can work some exercise into your TV watching. Sit-ups and push-ups, or even getting up and moving around during commercials, will at least keep you more active. You can even burn calories just stretching out your body. Anything is better than sitting for hours without moving. You do enough of that at night when you are asleep.

Just because you want to stay in and relax does not mean you have to eat poorly. Replace your junk food cabinet with the foods listed above and when it comes time for the snow to melt, you will find that you will not have to work so hard at looking your best in that swimsuit. The key here is making an attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle all year around.

Cardiovascular Exercise

11311106700_12017167165b0v5m.jpgWhether your goal is to lose weight, relieve stress, or just be healthier, cardiovascular exercises are undoubtedly the most important kind of exercise. These exercises are called cardiovascular because they exercise the heart and lungs, boosting oxygen transportation and consumption. This article will explore the many different kinds of cardiovascular exercises, both indoor and outdoor.

Indoor Cardio

Ideally we’d spend more time outside, particularly when exercising, but unfortunately we cannot always get outside. Luckily, then, there are many indoor options for cardiovascular exercises, many different machines which simulate activities you might find yourself doing outside where you have room to move around.

Elliptical Trainer: These are machines which simulate jogging or running by letting your knees bend and legs move back and forth without actually bringing your feet off the ground.

One of the most common questions gym instructors are asked is; what are the most effective weight loss exercises? The best calorie burning and weight loss exercises are going to be revealed. The importance of cardiovascular exercise

Cardiovascular exercise is exercise that involves elevating your heart rate, which in turn increases your heart and lung capacity. It is also known as aerobic exercise as you are using several large groups of muscles together at the same time. Best Fat Burning Cardiovascular Exercises – 6 Power Workouts That Work

A flat stomach can be achieved by doing different kinds of exercises. Cardiovascular exercises are some of the types of exercises that can help in getting your stomach flattened. This article will guide you on how to do cardiovascular exercises that help you get the flat stomach of your dreams. Note – it is important that these exercises be carried out in the proper ways, to get the best results thereof. Many people must use the elliptical trainer instead of jogging because the impact of running can cause problems for their knees. Since you never have to take your feet of the machine, there is no impact on your knees and you can experience a very comfortable, low impact running experience.

Exercise Bike: Just like the elliptical trainer, exercise bikes are great for people who cannot put too much stress on their legs. Most exercise bikes have adjustable resistance, so you can get a pretty strenuous workout while you’re sitting in one spot watching TV.

Rowing Machines: These machines are often overlooked but they provide a tremendous way to improve your cardiovascular strengthen as well as strengthen the muscles in your arms, legs, chest and abs.
These machines simulate the movements involved in a rowing a boat, which is something many of us have no way of actually doing. If you’re doing cardiovascular exercise to lose weight, then the rowing machine should be of particular interest to you because it not only burns a lot of calories but the abdominal aspect of it will help you lose belly fat and tone your stomach simultaneously.

Stair Climbing: There are machines that stimulate climbing stairs, but if we’re talking about indoor activities, climbing real stairs also applies. The great thing about climbing stairs is how easily it can be incorporated into your daily routine. Many of us take countless elevator rides every single day, you can imagine how opting for the stairs can really add up to some significant calorie burning over the course of an entire day, week, or month. You don’t need to always take the stairs, but the more times you can fit a little bit of cardiovascular exercise into your day the better off you are.

This is probably the most important tip to cardiovascular exercise; we are surrounded by conveniences and luxuries that allow us to exercise less than we’d otherwise have to. By refusing some of these modern conveniences you can burn a lot of calories without actually having to take a chunk of time out of your day to exercise. This could mean getting off the bus a few stops early, taking the stairs, skipping the moving sidewalks at the airport, walking on the escalators, or hand-delivering a letter.

Outdoor Cardio

Swimming: We’ll start with swimming because this is undoubtedly the most well-rounded and effective cardio exercise. This could also qualify as an indoor activity, though it is often much more invigorating to swim out on a lake or ocean. Swimming for just twenty minutes a day can burn up to five hundred calories, and it exercises all kinds of muscles that you don’t normally use. Many people like to swim in the morning because it’s a great way to get some exercise in before you’re worn out from the day, and it really wakes you up and gets you focused on the day ahead.

Walking: It was already mentioned how getting off the bus a few stops early can be a good way to incorporate a little exercise. Walking is actually a deceptively good exercise, many people think you need to be running to be exercising but going for a brisk walk can burn significant calories. Therefore if you don’t have recourse to incorporate walking into your normal routine you should book off some time to go for a brisk walk through a park.  Either way, walking gives you that little bit of exercise that you need every day to maintain your cardiovascular health. Walking also provides a really valuable time to get away from the rigors of your day and have some time to yourself to think things over, or it could be a time to have a long conversation with a friend or family member.

Other obvious types of outdoor cardio involve running and cycling, though the same principles basically apply to these as to the indoor versions. For cycling it is important to keep your back straight and not to overly strain your legs, you may want to confirm with a fitness or cycling expert that you have your bike adjusted properly. Running is the classic cardio exercise, and doesn’t require much explanation except to note that running on hard surfaces such as concrete can be tough on the knees; running on grass has the benefit of being softer. You could also try running on sand, this provides a very challenging run and is relatively soft on the knees. One last thing about running is that you should avoid high traffic areas. Breathing in car exhaust as you’re running should definitely be avoided if possible as this can defeat the purpose of a nice outdoor run.

While cardiovascular exercises are vital to the maintenance of good health remember that weight training is also essential to physical fitness.  Opt for three cardio sessions a week and another two weight training days if possible.  If you’re pressed for time though you can always try to fit in a little cardio and weight training in the same session

Health care reform: Put children as the First

11310738085_dsc-0381.jpg
The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) brought priorities to health insurance for children through federal reauthorization, and our Governor is likely to sign a bill in which funding for the Healthy Families program is restored. However, there remain millions of children living uninsured. Therefore, it is neccessary that the members of Congress and the President put their responsibility to finish the job of providing coverage for all our kids as first priority.

In negotiating the components of the final health reform package, members of Congress need to address the following principles:
1. Universal Children’s Coverage Currently, six million children are eligible but not enrolled in public coverage programs nationally.  Eliminating red tape and bureaucracy by simplifying the enrollment process is the most cost-effective, quickest, smartest and most cost-effective initial step toward ensuring that the lowest-income kids are insured.  Any health care reform plan must leave parents a hassle-free way to secure coverage for their children through a

Ballet Exercises

21311106700_healthy-eating-01.jpgBattement fondu can be done as a melting adagio exercise, or as a crisper faster movement. It is always elastic in quality, as it is designed to develop the thighs for strong jumping. The coordination required in the exercise is needed for the grands sautes such as grand jete en tournant, fouette saute and all the many other jumps found in the solos of classical ballet.

Assume the same position as before except stand facing at an angle to the wall so you can kick forward. Essentially all you will be doing is kicking. Simply keep your legs turned out and brush your foot up keeping it straight until you cannot go any higher, hold and bring down brushing the floor back to the starting position. Your upper body should not move; it should be a slow smooth motion taking about 6-8 seconds. Repeat on your other side.

Yoga exercises are very popular form of physical exercise in the western world. Check out information about the different yoga poses and tips for conducting yoga and pilates practices. It also describes about the benefits of doing yoga exercises. Scoliosis Exercises

There are several reasons why one must do exercises some of them being the ability to strengthen the muscles. Scoliosis exercises make the patients back muscles strong and adaptable. There are several exercises to help one strengthen the back muscles. The first one is the movable bar. This one, as the name itself implies, are portable so you can move it in a place where you are comfortable when you practice your dance steps. The other type is the fixed ballet bar. This type cannot be moved so you cannot take it in any place that you want.

To break it down, you could practice an exercise where the you develop devant, turn a quarter turn to face the wall, moving the supporting heel and thigh to a new turned out position, and the working leg coming forward to its proper second position. You could either close here, and develop a la seconde and then turn a quarter turn back to devant, or just keep holding the leg up and turn back to devant.

The way to test how much natural turnout you have is to lie on your stomach, legs straight.
Bend one knee, then let the lower leg fall inwards, as far as it can. This is your turnout angle. Some hip sockets are angled more to the side than others. If yours are angled to the front, you will have less potential to turnout.

Hence, it is now possible for a ballerina to execute simultaneous movements that showcase balance, coordination, and strength. One example would be the thigh work involved with the Bar Method. In this particular routine, your thighs, glutes, hamstrings, back muscles, and calves are being worked out. The extreme changes and fluid motion that the body is subjected to create a certain level of strain that you need some kind of support for proper execution.

Whether you have a huge performing arts school, or a small neighborhood ballet studio, visit, watch a couple of classes and get a feel for the place. Ballet wear includes your hairstyle, clothes you might want to wear over your leotards and tights, if allowed. Even if you want to hide a less than wraith-like figure under a sweater, filmy skirt, or dance pants, always wear a leotard and pink tights, for women.

You can gradually reach the same standards as students who have studied during the early years that perhaps you didn’t. You need the right info, that’s all. For instance, if you just read one article about a correct plie, and practise that for a week at home, you would improve and strengthen every exercise you do in class.

Just like office folk get to wear more casual clothes to work on Fridays, my student-day classes were allowed to wear colored leotards and black tights on Saturdays. We pushed it, and came to class with bright leg warmers, print head bands and jewelry just bigger than the allowed tiny stud pierced earrings. We were always asked to remove the tiniest of neck chains.

What Is Low Blood Pressure?

f_01310574136_ss8-1.jpgApart from the technical interpretation, low blood pressure is a sort of disease that saps energy from all parts of your body and mind. Your spirits are down and your body starts shivering. You get a feeling of sinking — and you need a rescue mission immediately!!

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood within the arteries of the body. Blood pressure is the driving force that causes blood to flow through the body from the arteries (where the pressure is high), through organs, and into the veins (where the pressure is low). Blood pressure is generated by the pumping of blood by the heart into the arteries as well as by the resistance to the flow of blood by the arteries. The systolic blood pressure (the top number) represents the pressure in the arteries as the muscle of the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. And the diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) represents the pressure in the arteries as the muscle of the heart relaxes after it contracts.

Systolic blood pressure for most healthy adults falls between 90 and 120 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Normal diastolic blood pressure falls between 60 and 80 mm Hg. (By convention, an individual’s blood pressure is written as systolic/diastolic blood pressure, e.g., 120/80). Current guidelines define normal blood pressure as lower than 120/80. Blood pressures between 120/80 and 140/90, which used to be considered “pre-hypertension,- are now considered too high. High blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), eye damage, and stroke.

When the flow of blood is too low to deliver enough oxygen and nutrients to vital organs such as the brain, heart, and kidney, it is referred to as Low Blood Pressure. When this happens, the organs are unable to function normally and can be permanently damaged. It should be noted that unlike high blood pressure, which is defined on the basis of blood pressure alone, low blood pressure is defined primarily by signs and symptoms of low blood flow. In fact, some individuals may have a blood pressure of 90/50 and have no signs or symptoms of low blood pressure, and, therefore, not have low blood pressure while others who normally have a blood pressure of 130/80 may develop symptoms and signs of low blood pressure if their blood pressure drops to 100/60.

There are certain traditional medicines that can help to cure low blood pressure. Butter milk is good for both high and low blood pressure. Using asafetida in various articles of food regularly, also helps to cure low blood pressure.

Recommended intensity of aerobic exercises is within 60 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate.
The number of calories you’ll burn during aerobic exercise is affected by your body weight, the intensity of your workout, your conditioning level, and metabolism, so burn rates are only an estimate. (Maximum heart rate is equal to 220 minus your age).

While aerobic exercise is the best way to improve cardiovascular fitness, weightlifting is the best way to strengthen muscles and bones and build muscle mass. Regular exercise is a key to maintaining a nontoxic body in our toxic environment.

Aerobic exercises and Muscles

Aerobic literally means “with oxygen”, and refers to the use of oxygen in muscles’ energy-generating process. Muscle soreness and discomfort are normal symptoms of strength training, and may be delayed as long as 48 hours after training. Muscle cells have many mitochondria, which allow them to respond quickly to the need for doing work. Muscle burns more calories at rest than other bodily tissues, though just how much is debatable.

Practice of aerobic exercises will help you develop stronger leg and hip muscles and it will do wonders for your cardio-respiratory fitness level as well. Start with the largest muscles and work your way up to the smallest. Your largest muscle is your hips and your smallest muscles are your arms.

Some important facts about fat: Fat will not turn into muscle, nor muscle into fat.

Any activity involving the major muscle groups can be aerobic, such as swimming, running, or brisk walking. ”But the biggest change in metabolism (in women at midlife and later) comes from loss of muscle mass. Women and men lose muscle as they age, which is why it is recommended that everyone strength train two to three days a week to keep the muscles strong.

Oxygen

Oxygen, fats, and glucose are used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the basic fuel for all cells. Oxygen aids the functioning of every body system. Aerobic literally means “with oxygen”, and refers to the use of oxygen in muscles’ energy-generating process. In such exercise, oxygen is used to “burn” fats and glucose in order to produce adenosine triphosphate, the basic energy carrier for all cells. Good circulation is a boon to every inch, providing oxygen and nutrients to the cells.

Aerobic exercise can be defined as the one, which involves the use of oxygen to produce energy, whereas anaerobic exercise makes the body to produce energy without using oxygen. While oxygen is used to break down glucose by aerobic exercise, the anaerobic exercises make use of phosphocreatine, stored in the muscles, for the process.

Aerobic exercises improve the circulation of blood and transportation of oxygen in the body reduces blood pressure and burns fat. It is a type of exercise in which muscles draw on oxygen in the blood as well as fats and glucose that increase cardiovascular endurance.
